Broken Future | Hammerson Luhanga
A broken arm and a broken future
What would you do if your situation couldn’t change? Maybe you’re living with a chronic illness. Or perhaps you’ve experienced the heartbreak of a marriage breakup or the loss of a loved one. Should you give up?
In 2003, tragedy struck Hammerson Luhanga. A motorcycle accident caused nerve damage and left him unable to use one of his hands. “I was riding a motorcycle at night when I tried to avoid a truck. I fell off the bike and hurt my neck. That accident changed everything,” Hammerson recalls. “I had dreams of becoming a famous actor and dancer, and I was on the right path. But that day, everything changed.”

Even in times of adversity, there is always something you can change, and that change begins with Confidence and Self-Acceptance. These are the tools that will help you endure and rise above the challenges you face.
Hammerson was born in 1967 in the Southern Highlands of Tanzania. He studied at Bagamoyo College of Arts, earning a diploma in Theatre Arts in 1994. His talent extends beyond acting to voice acting, captivating audiences across Tanzania.
“But the key to overcoming your challenges is simple: believe in yourself”, Hammerson says.
He chose to embrace self-acceptance instead of letting his disability define him. He rebuilt his confidence and refused to let the challenges he faced hold him back. Today, he’s a lead actor in The Legacy of Adam and one of Tanzania’s top voice actors. He not only earns a living doing what he loves but has also earned the respect of his peers.
In The Legacy of Adam, Hammerson plays multiple roles, including Abraham, Peter, and Samuel. But beyond acting, he manages radio play actors and dubbing for film projects. Now, he’s focused on writing films for TV and radio dramas, as well as voice-overs, with the dream of becoming a renowned film producer.
As a father of four, Hammerson is deeply committed to providing for his family. While he often puts his personal dreams on hold to support his children, he remains determined and proud of his journey.
“As a father, you are the leader, the provider, and the hero of your family,” he says. “My children are my top priority. I’ve worked hard to educate them, and the older ones are now independent. I’m still fighting to ensure that the younger ones finish their studies. Having a disability didn’t stop me from being there for my family or chasing my dreams.”
So, what about you? Have you ever felt like giving up? Remember, it’s never too late to pursue your dreams. No matter what obstacles you face, don’t let them define you. Rise up and take action today. Your journey is just beginning, and the strength to move forward lies within you.
